You only have to look at Memphis' nicknames (the 'Cradle of the Blues' and the 'Birthplace of Rock & Roll') to know how much the city's favourite son means to Memphis. Elvis was born near, then lived and died in Memphis, and his mansion Graceland is something of a mecca to music fans as a whole, never mind Elvis fans themselves. Elvis' home of 20 years was opened to the public a few years after his death, and it makes for a moving tour that ends appropriately enough at The King's resting place, now regarded understandably as a shrine by most visitors. Sun Studios is where Elvis made his very first recording, but a quick look at the full roster reveals the extent of local rocknroll activity in the mid-1950s, with BB King, Ike Turner, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash and Roy Orbison all having recorded here. But Memphis is more than just music. It's a charming mix of modern and traditional, where Victorian villas sit in the shadow of modern skyscrapers and ultra modern shopping facilities, all built by that most enigmatic of American rivers, the Mississippi.

Sun Studio is famous for being where Elvis made his first recording in 1954, but music greats like Howlin' Wolf, BB King, Ike Turner, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash and Roy Orbison have also recorded here. The National Civil Rights Museum is where Dr Martin Luther King was assasinated in 1968 and it features exhibits on key events in the civil rights movement that led to the end of legal segregation in the mid-1960s. Take a steamboat ride on the Mississippi or visit the Mississippi River Museum which covers 10,000 years of river history and includes the World War II bomber, Memphis Belle. Soul and R'n'B legend The Reverend Al Green holds court at the Full Gospel Tabernacle backed by a full choir when the hymns start to flow. Services are held on Sundays and visitors should bring at least a dollar per adult for the collection tray and dress neatly.
